ABOUT DARREN FUNG

Darren Fung started to compose at the age of fifteen through the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra’s Young Composer’s Project. Darren completed his Bachelor of Music degree at McGill in 2002, culminating with his tenure as Composer-In-Residence for the McGill Concert Choir. His works have been performed most notably by the Vancouver and Victoria Symphony Orchestras; Orchestre de chambre I Musici de Montreal; the Altius Brass; Sofia’s Philharmonia Bulgarica; and Prague’s FILMharmonic Orchestra among others.

His film scores have been heard in competition at major international film festivals around the world, and was recently honored with the PowerPost Award for Excellence in Music Composition at the 2005 Atlantic Film Festival in Halifax. This past March, Toronto’s Tapestry New Opera Works premiered two of Darren’s original chamber operas in the highly acclaimed Opera-To-Go production, where the Toronto Star’s John Terauds praised his music for “pulling all the right emotional strings”. He recently finished the score for Chaz Thorne’s feature film Just Buried recording with the FILMharmonic Orchestra in Prague. He is an alumnus of the prestigious ASCAP Film Scoring Workshop in Los Angeles, the Aspen Music Festival and School, and Tapestry’s Composer-Librettist Laboratory.

Darren is a multiple grant recipient from the Canada Council and the Alberta Foundation for the Arts. As an entrepreneur, he was recently awarded the Coup de Coeur in the Montréal Regional Final for the Eighth Annual Québec Entrepreneur Contest, and has received business funding from the Fondation du maire de Montréal pour la jeunesse and CDEC Côte-des-Neiges/Notre-Dame-de-Grâce. An alumnus of the Air Cadet Gliding and Flying Scholarship programs,he has remained active as a volunteer for eight years within the program, and is a member of the Montréal Rowing Club. As an advocate for emerging composers, he currently serves as the youngest member of the Board of Directors for the Guild of Canadian Film Composers, where he co-chairs the committee responsible for its national publication, Spotting Notes. This year, Darren was one of sixteen emerging leaders from all walks of professional life, who were awarded Action Canada fellowships for the 2006-07 year. Darren and his company, Stinky Rice Studios are currently based out of Montréal.
